The majority of drug offences are charged under The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and was implement to end the use of drugs for non-medicinal purposes. It describes what is illegal with regards to controlled substances.

Offences under this act include: -

• Possession.
• Possession with intent to supply.
• Production cultivation or manufacture.
• Supplying another person.
• Offering to supply another person.
• Allowing a premises to be used for the consumption (cannabis or opium only), supply or production.

Offences can also be charged under the Drugs Act 2005, Medicines Act 1968, Drug Trafficking Act 1994 and the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

Drugs are split up into 3 classifications: -

• Class A – Cocaine, Heroin, Ecstasy etc.
• Class B – Cannabis, Amphetamines, etc.
• Class C – Ketamine, Tranquillisers, etc.

with offences involving Class A drugs being the most serious. As an example supplying a Class C drug can carry a sentence of up to 14 years imprisonment where as supplying a Class A drug carries a sentence of up to life in prison.
